Tips to reduce your fuel consumption

A clean engine

It’s a known fact that a clean engine works much more efficiently and uses less fuel, so keeping your engine clean is the key to a fuel efficient vehicle. Ensuring that your car is serviced regularly is a great way to make sure everything has been cleaned out, when having your car serviced, a mechanic will clean out the fuel and oil system. This helps as a clean engine will use less fuel and produce less CO2.

Less stopping

We understand that it’s not always easy to stop the car and can also be dangerous, but by being extra attentive with traffic, you can slow earlier by lifting you foot off the accelerator while keeping the car in gear.

Pumping to cut down

By checking and adjusting your tyre pressure regularly and also before long journeys, your helping to improve you fuel efficiency. Under-inflated tyres increase the amount of CO2 being produced. However it is important that you don’t over-inflated your tyres as this can be unsafe.

Don’t over-rev

By using your gears wisely and changing up a gear slightly earlier, can reduce the revs that you do. If your car runs on diesel, you can change up a gear when the rev counter reaches 2000rpm and if your drive a petrol you should do it at 2500rpm.

Don’t idle

When your engine is idling, you’re wasting fuel and adding to CO2 emissions, if you think you’ll be at a standstill for more than 3 minutes then switch off your engine.

Drive at the appropriate speed

Staying at or within the speed limit will increase you driver safety but it will also reduce your CO2 emission and save you money on your petrol costs, driving at 70mph could mean you’re using up to 9% more fuel that if you drive at 60mph and up to 15% more fuel than at 50mph.

We hope these top tips have been helpful and put into practice, you should be able to see some fuel savings. We would like to confirm that it’s very important you keep especially safe and attentive whilst taking on board any of these tips when driving.
