How to Care For Your Car in The Winter

With November well under way, it won’t belong until the Winter weather takes a hold of us. Be it snow or fog, we have created a blog to help you to not only keep you and your car safe over Winter, but tips on caring for your car. Fleetcare sincerely hope that our hints and advice help you when caring for your car over Winter and keep you safe when travelling.

Below you will find 5 handy hints on caring for your car during Winter which will also help with your road safety too.

Warm Up Your Engine

When cold mornings come, it’s not just you who feels the cold. Your car will too, meaning that it may need a little longer than usual to warm up before setting off. Try to give the car a few minutes to warm up and get everything circulating before you are on your way. And of course, this applies to any cold nights too as your engine may need a short while to warm up prior to your journey.

De-Ice Your Car

It goes without saying that when the snow and ice comes your car will need to be de-iced, but make sure you do all windows. It’s best to make time on a morning to de-ice your car on every window so you have a clear view of every angle. This will not only make sure you have a better view, but it’s much safer too as you could easily miss a car to the side of you.

Plan The Route

Now that the clocks have gone back, the likelihood is that you will go to work in the dark and finish in the dark. So although you may know the way to work, if you have any other journeys to make ie. Christmas shopping trips, try to plan out the route you will take to avoid any last minute rushing or panicking. This will not only improve your drive, but give you one less thing to worry about so you can focus more on the road ahead.

Consider The Weather

Along with driving in possible snow and fog over the Winter periods, you could also be faced with ice or even black ice. So not only could there be snow, but possible black ice too. Having said this, it’s always best to be aware of the fact that there could be ice anywhere on your journey. This way, there’s no risk of any surprises or accidents.

Drive Extra Careful

Always be aware of other road users, especially in the Winter. With dark nights and icy roads, the condition in which you’re used to driving in changes dramatically once Winter hits us. So drive with extra precaution over Winter to make sure that you’re not only keeping yourself safe, but other road users too. It may mean that you reduce your speed or even indicate extra early, but it’s all worth while knowing that no accidents were caused by not doing so.
