Driving In The Snow

Even though the majority of the snow has cleared up across the UK now, we still thought we would share with you some important tips for driving in the snow.. you know… for when it comes back round again!

One of the very first things that you need to consider when you are planning to drive in snow is whether you need to make the journey at all. If you do not, then you may be better delaying it to a time when the road conditions have improved. However, if it is an essential journey, always stick to main roads and follow the tips we have listed below to ensure that your journey is as safe as possible.

Make Sure You Are Prepared

Wear warm clothes and make sure you have a torch and a blanket with you. If you are wearing winter boots then they should be suitable for driving in.

Drive As Smoothly As Possible

All actions should be as smooth as possible, including braking and accelerating. This will make it less likely that you will lose control of the car and enter into a skid.

Take Care When Braking

Remember that you will need a greater distance for braking than if the road was dry. Therefore you will need to leave a larger distance than normal between you and the car in front of you.

Make Sure Your Vision Isn’t Obstructed

You should allow extra time when planning your journey to make sure that your windscreens are completely free of snow and ice. Any snow should also be removed from your wipers so that they can operate properly. Helping other road users to see you is also important and you should always drive with your lights on in snow.

Plan Ahead For The Whole Journey

Even if the weather is not too bad when you set off on your journey, it can get worse very quickly. Always check the weather reports for the time that you will be travelling home, and take any precautions as necessary.

Pay Attention To The Road

Even if you are driving down roads you are familiar with, things can look different in the snow. There may be obstructions in the road that are hidden by the snow, and road signs may not be as noticeable as usual. The traffic is also likely to be much busier than usual so you should pay attention to what other road users are doing.
